On Longing Assignment

Image
"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale." Seeing as these two figures are standing next to one another, they are resembling the scale they have from one another.  "The souvenir speaks to a context of origin through a language of longing, for it is not an object arising out of need or use value." These two pieces I created we're for both of my grandparents. Each one in a different language but when combined they create a whole piece themselves resembling the relationship I have and they have with me.  "The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the three-dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body." I am out in public, re-creating a piece, that is in three-dimensional but much smaller in scale compared to the original. I am using my body pressed against the corner of this building to become one with the building. "To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy." My ...

Natural History of the Senses Relief Sculpture

Image
Divine DJ, arches paper, card stock, colored ink, black foam board, gel medium, wood glue, 28" x 39" x 2" Artist Statement: This Sculpture explores movement through and within its space. It was inspired by a chapter from the book 'Natural History of the Senses'. In this chapter, it discussed how, if you use paint to cover a turtles shell, it harms the turtle. In my piece, I wanted to convey this message of two hands individually impacting this flower petals in the middle of the piece. I believe the context is so important because it says if society itself doesn't realize how much it changes things. We take things in our own hands and we evolve them ourselves. It seems that we leave no room for the natural to express itself. Inspiration: Ruth Coffman Presentation By Hannah Garrido on Touch. My own presentation based on Hands.

Momento

Walk With Us, colored ink, gel medium, wood, 3" x 3" x 1/4" Artist Statement:  This sculpture reflects the time that I spent with my friends on the beach late at night. I remember this so vividly because it was the first time that I had a group of friends that I got along with and had common likes and interests with. I used a piece of wood to represent the sand at the beach. Then I chose, very carefully, monochromatic color palette to represent the ocean. Then I created these seashell looking abstract foot prints, to represent the path that we would walk on the beach. I believe that I have visually communicated unity and balance in this piece with the color and the abstract pieces that I put on this piece. Experimental Sculpture Collection

Image
Collection 1-3, wood glue, balsa wood, paper pulp, colored ink, wire, gel medium, pushpins, 7" x 4" x 5" Reflection:  My intentions sculptures was to visually create Unity within the peace and with the other sculptures. I wanted pieces that were using different mediums as well as different colors. It's interesting to see where I came from with the colors since none of them have correlation with each other, but the overall end product is very pleasing to the eye. For future in further investigation I would like to use completely different mediums for each of the pieces. I would like to use more color and perhaps bigger scale for the next time I create pieces similar to these. Visual Symbols

Foxxy Lady, air dry clay, colored ink, arches paper, colored pencils, colored pastels, 3" x  2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Oh Whale..., air dry clay, colored ink, arches paper, colored pencils, colored pastels, 3" x 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" Reflection Statement:                           My intentions were the visually communicate the masks and how to relate to their figure. I wanted to focus on making the colors match what the behind the scenes meaning is. I chose certain masks to resemble property and war. These two different ideas were made individually and yet harmonically. I want to keep exploring with the masks, as I think it will be a great artistic study to do using sculpture.  Research:  Website explaining the masks. https://theculturetrip.com/asia/japan/articles/traditional-japanese-masks-and-what-theyre-used-for/ This website had the perfect amount of information I needed to to better understand my...
