On Longing Assignment

"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale."

Seeing as these two figures are standing next to one another, they are resembling the scale they have from one another.

"The souvenir speaks to a context of origin through a language of longing, for it is not an object arising out of need or use value."

These two pieces I created we're for both of my grandparents. Each one in a different language but when combined they create a whole piece themselves resembling the relationship I have and they have with me.

"The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the three-dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body."

I am out in public, re-creating a piece, that is in three-dimensional but much smaller in scale compared to the original. I am using my body pressed against the corner of this building to become one with the building.

"To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy."

My sweet boy Rocky is showing me his souvenir as his reward for being good, that would be unlike what I would consider a souvenir or reward for me.

"The place of origin must remain unavailable in order for desire to be generated."

As a graduate you will never again be able to experience what you experienced while you were in college. It is a once in a lifetime experience that remains unavailable to those who can't afford it, but in order for it to become a desirable experience for people they have to do the things that they love while they attend. Although it is expensive, the experience is worth it.
