Natural History of The Senses Presentation Assignment

Mermaids are creatures that are half woman half fish. They're the mediators of humans and sea life. 'The Oceans Inside us' discusses how we are connected to the oceans early in evolution. ‘These creatures have us questioning about humanity’s understanding of and place in the universe.’ –article ‘Connection between humans and the seas.’ -article

Memory and Olfaction: We smell things and remember certain events, items, people, etc. 'The Oceans Inside Us' discusses how our ancestors smelled to detect danger was coming or to find a mate. ‘When it comes to smell its like a sensory footprint for memory.’ –article For example, the smell of fresh baked cookies can remind you of your grandma. No need to be cooking with her in that moment to remember this memory, the smell of the cookies reminds you of her.

'The Hand': Hands can speak for us. They are a way of communication; a language. ASL comes to mind of course. Palm readers read you differently. They tell you what they see because it is what you want to hear. ASL is literal translation. If we don’t understand the hands being used as communication or language in this way, we will rely on our surroundings to translate for us. Which aren’t always accurate. What the hand wears also tells us about someone's status.

'The Hand': Emotional Touch. By just the touch of someone's hand when you need it most brings people to have more comfort. Messengers of emotion. Why do we fidget with our hands when we are nervous? It helps to keep our minds at ease a way of comfort. It has been tested and proven that when nurses use a caring touch it’s used as a way of showing 'culturally competent care.' -article
